Hemp Politics in Maine show that there is growing support for hemp farming. The state Legislature is working on a bill that will legalise the cultivation of industrial hemp, and communities are are showing their support.
Rep. Deborah Sanderson, R-Chelsea, recognises Maine’s potential to participate in the hemp industry that is slowly emerging throughout the U.S. For farmers it would be a new crop with favourable economic opportunities. Rather than importing hemp, it would supply local companies producing hemp-based products such as textiles, paper, and building materials.
So far Colorado, Kentucky and Vermont are the only three states that have legalised industrial hemp. Perhaps Maine will be the fourth.
