When hemp was legalized in 2019, the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University was granted permission to commence research into hemp cultivation in the state.

The purpose of the hemp trials was to gain insight into the viability of hemp cultivation in the state, as well as distribution and management of the crop under state Department of Agriculture regulations.

New Mexico’s hemp industry has recently shown a spike in interest, but more research is needed to help growers navigate the challenges of hemp cultivation in the state. Although research shows a promising future for the crop in New Mexico, knowledge about soil quality and optimal growing conditions in specific regions is invaluable.
