In Uttarakhand, India, a unique, eco-friendly house has been built using ‘hempcrete’, a mixture of Hemp Fibre and lime, in place of concrete.

Hemp Fibre

The 5-room house was designed and constructed by architect husband and wife team Namrata Kandwal and Gaurav Dixit. The house is significant because it marks the first large-scale hempcrete-constructed building in India.

The house is entirely eco-friendly. In addition to using the sustainable building material, hempcrete, it has an underground water harvesting system and rooftop solar panels.

The benefits of building with hempcrete go beyond being sustainable and eco-friendly. Hempcrete has moisture-handling properties that prevent mould issues. It is also carbon neutral and a natural air-purifier.
