In a country with frequent seismic activity it make sense to use a sustainable building material, which is one of the greatest Uses of Hemp.
Haiti typically builds homes out of concrete. These are dangerous structures when they collapse and, as a result, many lives are taken when earthquakes happen. Most recently, the August 14 earthquake that hit southern Haiti resulted in hundreds of collapsed buildings, and a death toll in the thousands.
Although Haitians see concrete as an advanced material and it makes them feel safer, homes made of organic material such as bamboo and hemp are much more sustainable and resistant to earthquakes. Concrete is strong initially, and a good material for hurricane season, but it is gradually worn down by the elements and becomes less secure against collapse.
In Haiti, there is a stigma against alternative construction materials such as hemp and bamboo. Unfortunately, this is holding them back from developing safer homes more resistant to earthquake destruction.
