Industrial hemp is part of the cannabis family. It has at least 50,000 uses, from cooking oil to biofuels. It is the most versatile plant on the planet, but only if whole plant harvest is legal. That’s why East Anglian farmers are calling for an amendment to the current hemp laws.
Hemp cultivation is on the rise in the UK, but farmers are restricted to growing hemp for its fibre and seeds only. This prohibits them from cashing in on the cannabidiol (CBD) market. CBD is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the plant, which remain restricted and must be destroyed.
