There are so many Uses of Hemp, from cars and cosmetics to food and textiles. Rob Jungmann, owner of Jungmaven hemp clothing company, wants to see hemp tshirts become as common as cotton by the year 2020. He’s even made it the tagline for his company. And it fits right in with the what’s happening in Congress at the moment.
Scheduled in July, Congress is looking at passing a bill to legalize the farming of industrial hemp in the U.S. Even though the first American flag was constructed of hemp and President George Washington was a hemp farmer, hemp was made illegal during the Prohibition era, along with marijuana.
Marijuana and hemp both derive from the same plant, Cannabis sativa. After discovering the psychoactive ingredient in the plant’s flowers, growers began separating the plant strains to create a new breed that contained greater quanities of cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the ingredient that gets you high. Hence, marijuana was born.
