New York is starting to recognize the value and Uses of Hemp. There is still a ways to go, though, due to concern over its relationship to marijuana.
Industrial hemp contains only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that gives the high. But unlike marijuana, hemp can be used to make healthy edible products from its seeds, and many products from its fibrous bark and core, such as plastics, building materials, paper, insulation, animal bedding and cosmetics.
Two lawmakers from the Southern Tier recognize the economic benefits of industrial hemp. After the 2014 federal farm bill was put into effect, Assemblywoman Lupardo and Sen. Tom O’Mara sponsored bills to allow hemp research permits. Lupardo has been pressuring New York to get on board with the booming hemp industry.
