The legalization of hemp in the United States late last year, has expanded opportunities and lead to even more Uses of Hemp.
Levi Strauss & Co. has developed a technique for blending hemp with cotton, making them one of the forerunners for sustainable clothing. What makes hemp sustainable? It uses substantially less water and chemicals than cotton.
The catch is that when it comes to making fabrics and textiles, hemp is a tricky plant to work with. Hemp fibres come from the long, coarse stalk of the plant, whereas cotton fibres come from soft, fluffy buds.
Levi’s has found a way to blend cotton with hemp, using very little water. It’s a technique that they will continue to develop over the next several years. The ultimate goal is to have a 100% cottonized-hemp line of clothing.
