The Uses of Hemp have a new addition, with prothetic legs now being made from hemp fibre and used by a triathlete.
Mark Dunshee had the misfortune of not just breaking, but smashing his left leg in a dirt bike accident. The severity of the injury was not something that could be overcome. After a decade of living in pain, that doctors couldn’t find a cure for, he made the ultimate decision to have the leg removed.
Most people would say that this was his biggest life choice, but such was not the case. Dunshee got a job in a prosthetic company, in order to learn the in and outs of the business, so that he could find a solution to his own situation.
This is where Mark met Kyle Trivisinno, a man who made prosthetic legs. “He asked me what I thought of making a leg out of hemp,” Dunshee said. “I personally had never thought of it, I was just learning how the layers were laid up … He had been looking at hemp a long time before meeting me.”
