If it wasn’t for the possible penalty by the federal government, Vermont farmers would probably already be growing hemp, but due to the hemp’s relation to marijuana, farmers run the risk of being arrested by the federal government.
Vermont Legislature, however, has supported the production of industrial hemp since it passed Act 84 in 2013, stating its many uses such as fibre, textiles, biofuel, paper, protein-rich foods, cosmetic products, rope, and much more.
Although they are from the same species, Cannabis sativa, there is a vast different between Hemp vs. Marijuana. It is important to note that industrial hemp contains a mere 0.3 % of THC, the psychoactive ingredient, making it impossible to get high. Large quantities of THC are only found in the marijuana variety.
