Regulations for growing hemp in the UK remain tightly controlled by the misconstrued understanding of Hemp vs. Marijuana.
Patrick Gillett, co-founder of the agricultural co-operative Hempen, is determined to see hemp cultivation in Britain so expansive, that government restrictions become defunct. Ultimately, Gillett’s goal is for Britain’s rules to change, to allow for whole plant harvest.
The issue, is that hemp is still lumped in with its illicit cousin, marijuana, in the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act. Despite its superficial resemblance to marijuana, hemp has a much lower content of tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC), the compound that gives the marijuana high.
Currently, only a select few are permitted to harvest the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant, which are used to extract CBD. The majority of hemp farmers in Britain are only allowed to harvest the stalks and seeds.
