Due to continuing stigma of Hemp vs. Marijuana, the Senate is holding back progress for Kentucky hemp farmers. House Bill 506 would expand opportunities for hemp farmers, but the Senate won’t even look at it.
Many Kentucky hemp farmers are still sitting on their 2019 hemp harvest, because the current classification of combustible hemp products is the same as marijuana.
Rep. Mark Hart is the sponsor for House Bill 506, which would distinguish these hemp products from marijuana. Farmers with hemp licenses would then be allowed to move and market their crop.
The Senate majority is not yet ready or willing to recognize the difference between hemp and marijuana. Unfortunately, it’s Kentucky’s hemp farmers that have to pay the price.
