In South Carolina, the distinction of Hemp vs. Marijuana is becoming clearer, as the number of interested hemp farmers increases.
The S.C. Department of Agriculture received over 100 applications from farmers last month, but only 20 growing permits will be granted this year. Next year the number of licences will increase to 40.
Janet Ralph of Conway, S.C., is hoping she’ll be granted a permit to grow hemp. Ralph produces her own cannabidiol (CBD) oil for her daughter, Harmony, who suffers from intractable epilepsy. The CBD oil helps tremendously with her seizures.
Producing her own CBD oil lead to the creation of her business, Palmetto Harmony. She currently imports hemp from neighbouring states, but if licensed to grow, she’ll be able to use her own crop.
