In Hemp Politics this week, Tennessee farmers are eager to be at the forefront of hemp cultivation. However, it will likely be a year before they are permitted to do so.
Governor Bill Haslam signed the bill that legalizes hemp to be grown, but it is only for the purposes of research and development. State Republican Senator Frank Niceley strongly supported the bill, and says that at this point in time, farmers will probably need to team up with universities and the Department of Agriculture, in order to get involved with farming hemp.
There is also a $500 permit fee for farmers looking to grow hemp, but that won’t hinder the farmers who recognize the potential cash benefit of cultivating hemp.
