In the state of Virginia, farmers are hoping that marijuana legalization would have a ripple effect on the state’s Hemp Politics.
Governor Ralph Northam is backing the legalization of marijuana, which could have a positive impact on Virginia’s budding hemp industry. There is a possibility that marijuana legalization would loosen the reigns on hemp growing regulations that are holding farmers back from reaping the full benefits of their crops.
Although the number of acres may be increasing for hemp farmers, the amount of CBD they can legally extract is not. CBD, a medicinal component extracted from hemp, does not get you high. It is used to treat many ailments, such as pain and anxiety.
THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and CBD are both cannabinoids. Legally, hemp plants can not contain more than 0.3 percent THC. Plants containing more than this are deemed illegal and must be destroyed. This restricts how much farmers can reap and earn from their hemp harvests.
Farmers would like to see the 0.3 percent restriction increased to 0.8, to allow for their crops to reach their full potential.
