Gov. Jared Polis is the mastermind behind the goal of making Colorado the centre of industrial hemp production in the U.S.
Polis is a considerable supporter of hemp. He recently signed off on making June 6-13 the official Hemp Week in Colorado, and has made it his mission to correct the misinformation about hemp, caused by its association to marijuana.
This is nothing new for Polis, who has been an advocate for hemp for many years. On July 4, 2013, while serving as a Congressman, he assisted an activist in hoisting an American flag made of Colorado-grown hemp. At that point in time, hemp was still illegal.
Hemp production was banned in the U.S. for almost 50 years. That changed with the 2018 Farm Bill, which removed hemp from Schedule 1 controlled substances, and made it an ordinary agricultural commodity.
Hemp is making a comeback in the U.S., and Polis wants Colorado to spearhead the hemp production industry.
