Upon recognition of the benefits of Hemp Nutrition, The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand has approved the legalisation of hemp for human consumption.
Now that health ministers have deemed the seeds as safe to eat, you can expect to see hemp food and beverage products, such as smoothies and muffins, on grocery store shelves and served in restaurants before the year is up.
The new law will be put into effect after a six month trial, as there is still some legislation that must be overcome in both New Zealand and Australia.
Industrial hemp differs from marijuana in that it contains only a fraction of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component in marijuana. Despite this, ministers have had concerns that the amount could still affect roadside drug tests and give the deceiving impression that they don’t take drugs seriously.
