Hemp in the News takes us to Texas, a state that anticipated its hemp industry to flourish, but it has taken a lot of trial and error.
With the legalization of industrial hemp came an expectation of a new cash crop for farmers, but in Texas it is still in the learning stages. Scientists continue to test varieties to ascertain which ones grow best in Texas’ growing conditions.
Initially, hemp growers were cultivating hemp without any direction or expertise. It wasn’t until the end of 2019, when the Texas Legislature granted growing licenses, that the Texas Department of Agriculture, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and AgriLife Extension got into the act.
The hemp hype has dwindled as the industry has seen many changes, and growing hemp in Texas climates has proven more challenging than expected. Determining which hemp varieties can adapt to the growing conditions in the state, will help eliminate problems for farmers and producers.
