Iowa is the latest state to put Hemp in the News. On March 20, 2020, Iowa passed a law that has made hemp a legal crop in the state.
This is good news for farmers. For the past few years, they’ve seen prices drop for row crops. Hemp legalisation brings new opportunities to the state’s agricultural community.
The 2014 and 2018 federal farm bills have made it all possible. The 2014 farm bill laid the groundwork by determining hemp as a potential crop, and creating hemp pilot programs. The 2018 farm bill made the distinction of hemp from marijuana, removing it from the list of controlled substances and establishing it as an agricultural commodity.
Although the federal farm bills paved the way for the new hemp industry, state governments are still required to pass their own laws to legalise hemp and put regulations in place. Iowa has now joined the majority of states to do so.
