Washington Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden put Hemp in the News with the report of an amendment included in the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill. The amendment will prevent interference from the federal government on industrial hemp cultivation state laws.
Hemp farming is now permitted in 27 states, but farmers still risk being targeted by the Drug Enforcement Agency and receiving legal punishment.
Merkley is opposed to the federal government’s ability to interfere with states who allow industrial hemp farming. The federal government is standing in the way of the job creation and various opportunities that industrial hemp has to offer. Merkley and Wyden want to put an end to the ongoing federal restrictions.
