New Zealand and Australia bring Hemp in the News as they are the only countries where eating and selling hemp seed based foods is illegal. This is due to a misconception that eating hemp will interfere with drug testing devices.
Agriculture sectors would like to see industrial hemp approved as a food crop, but it is held back by government regulations.
Since 2008 it has been legal to grow industrial hemp in New South Wales, Australia, but legalities make it very difficult to obtain hemp seeds for the purpose of growing food. This is jeopardizing the opportunity for NSW to cash in on this million-dollar crop.
