You only have to look at America’s Hemp History to see how the industrious plant was once a staple crop with a variety of uses.
The University of Illinois is offering a new course in its crop sciences program: Cannabis Classification and Management. The course, instructed by Lee Seung-yuop, focuses on cannabis biology, classification, and proper management practices for processing the plant for various uses.
Seung-yuop is knowledgable about the history of hemp. He remarks how Henry Ford designed a car that used hemp fibre to strengthen the frame, and hemp oil as fuel. It is also worthy to note that several U.S. presidents grew hemp in the past, such as President George Washington and President Thomas Jefferson.
It is a known fact that hemp was first domesticated 12,000 years ago. It was outlawed in 1970 in the United States, but is making a strong comeback. The growing interest in cannabis has lead to education opportunities about the crop and its emerging industry.
