Turkey’s Hemp History is not unlike that of other countries – a once thriving crop that was outlawed along with marijuana in the 1970s. Now, although cannabis is still forbidden, Turkey’s dire economic situation has prompted hemp crop trials as a possible solution.
The Turkish journalist, Abdurrahman Dilipak, is a key advocate in Turkey, speaking up about the need for hemp legalisation. In a newspaper column, Dilipak wrote of the many uses of cannabis and said, “This plant is generally a blessing of Allah. It cleans the air, water and soil.”
Going back several decades, industrial hemp was once a common crop in the Black Sea region of Turkey. This all changed in the 1970s, however, when the drug laws were tightened dramatically due to international pressure.
