A new study confirms that in Hemp History, cultivation of the cannabis sativa plant dates back to Neolithic times in East Asia.
The study, directed by Luca Fumagalli of the University of Lausanne, brought together scientists from Britain, China, India, Pakistan, Qatar, and Switzerland. Together they examined the genetics of plants from around the world. Their findings, printed in last weeks issue of Science Advances, reported that the genetic history of cannabis domestication had not been researched to the same degree as other plants, primarily due to legal limitations.
The scientists collected complete genomes from wild plants, historically cultivated plants, and crossbreeds of hemp and marijuana plants. The results showed that cannabis sativa was first domesticated 12,000 years ago in China.
