In the past few years, Western nations have been making Hemp History by easing restrictions on the use and cultivation of both hemp and marijuana. In the U.S., marijuana is legal in 11 states and medicinal cannabis is legal in 33. Canada legalized marijuana in 2018, making it readily available across the nation.
Japan holds a steadfast position of zero tolerance when it comes to intoxicants, but it hasn’t always been this way.
Prior to 1948, the year the restrictions were put in place, hemp was a common crop grown in Hiroshima, Tochigi and in other areas of Japan. Historically, cannabis was used in religious practices, especially among indigenous people.
