Hemp History and economics were the focus of the Storm Lake forum held by the Iowa Hemp Association last week. There were discussions about the industrial and medicinal uses of the plant, and also the legalities surrounding the cultivation of hemp.
Attendees were very interested in the environmental potential of the plant, specifically as a bio fuel.
Hemp was first cultivated 12,000 years ago, and it’s no stranger to the U.S., (in fact, it was once used as currency), but in 1937 the U.S. made hemp cultivation illegal. It was one of the first laws introduced to the American legal system.
