Hemp Farming in Texas took a hit with the state Agriculture Commissioner’s claim that hemp farmers are hiding marijuana in their crops.
Last week, while speaking with Austin American-Statesman, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller stated that it’s very likely some licensed hemp growers are concealing marijuana in their fields. The claim is not based on evidence, and is a troubling statement for Texas’ hemp industry.
Although marijuana is illegal in Texas, authorities in some counties, such as Austin and El Paso, have chosen not to prosecute for small amounts of possession.
Miller says there are not enough funds for his department to manage the state’s hemp program and, therefore, assumes farmers are taking advantage by growing hemp’s illicit cousin.
