The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) would like Hemp as Medicine to be legal, but this requires change to the laws of its production.
The IFA is trying to arrange talks with the Department of Health in order to propose new legislation for the production of hemp for medicinal purposes. The IFA’s initial request for a meeting with the Irish Health Department was in January.
Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant but has low or untraceable amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the psychoactive compound that gives marijuana users a high. In Ireland, hemp cultivation is strictly regulated by the Health Products Regulatory Authority. Fintan Conway, an executive secretary with the IFA, sees the missed opportunity for Ireland to cash in on the growing global market of CBD oil and medicinal hemp.
