A new pharmaceutical company in Ireland, GreenLight Medicines, has received €500,000 to research Hemp as Medicine.
Dr. James Linden, founder of GreenLight Medicines, and UCD’s Dr. Keith Murphy, are working together to develop new medicines derived from cannabis.
The main focus of the company is to study all aspects of cannabis and cannabinoids for medicinal purposes. Its first investment of €100,000 was used to buy seeds. The second investment is from a group of private Irish investors.
This latest funding will allow the company to continue its research and development of medicines made from cannabis extracts and other plant forms, that will be used to treat many different illnesses.
Linden stated that there continues to be evidence that cannabinoids are highly effective in treating several illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, arthritis, epilepsy and cancer.
