A Sydney-based company is preparing to launch a hemp industry on Cape Breton with the production of Hemp as Medicine in the form of hemp oil.
After securing a $14 million deal with a Brazilian pharmaceutical company, the relatively new company, Highland Hemp of Sydney, Nova Scotia, hopes the new deal with be the start of Cape Breton’s hemp industry.
Parker Rudderham, president and CEO of Highland Hemp, says the company will be cultivating approximately 11,000 acres of hemp this year.
The stalks of the plant will be used to make hemp oil for the Brazilian company’s order. If Highland Hemp’s hemp crop isn’t enough to fill the order, Rudderham says they’re prepared to acquire hemp oil from other producers.
Hemp oil contains cannabidiol, a component that is beneficial for a number of medical conditions.
