Come harvest time, Sir Paul McCartney will be reaping the Benefits of Hemp, as he has just added the crop to his collection. He has been growing crops such as spelt wheat, rye and peas at his home in Peasmarsh near Rye, and recently revealed his latest addition, hemp.
With a licence to grow, hemp cultivation is legal in the UK, but it has to be grown away from the public eye. As McCartney pointed out, “… you’ve got to keep it where people can’t see it, because you get all the kids coming in and robbing it!”
Hemp has many uses, but smoking it is not one of them. Although it stems from the same cannabis sativa plant as marijuana, industrial hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC, the psychoactive component that gives the marijuana high.
Peter Miles is the founder of eHempHouse, a company dedicated to the progress of sustainability. He remarks on how hemp has often been called the ‘Magic Plant’ because the Benefits of Hemp are innumerable, and it can help combat climate change.
