A collaborative research project in Britain is taking a closer look at the Benefits of Hemp to determine its carbon-sequestering potential.
Hemp seed milk is the latest milk product found on store shelves in the UK. When comparing the sustainable farming and production methods of hemp to soy, dairy, and almond, hemp comes out on top. Dairy farming has a heavy carbon footprint, soy contributes to land-clearing and deforestation, and almonds require a lot of water.
The Soil Association is collaborating with Cranfield University scientists and the British Hemp Alliance, to investigate the sustainability of industrial hemp farming. A small team of farmers are aiding the project by testing the crop’s capacity to store carbon and replenish soil.
