Hemp Farming on the prairies is seeing a rise in popularity and farmers hope to cash in on the booming industry.

The legalization of marijuana and the nutritional benefits of hemp seeds have helped the fledgling industry gain momentum. Health Canada reported that there were approximately 22,000 hectares of hemp grown in 2020, compared to only 2,400 hectares in 1998.

For the past 12 years, Alberta farmer Rod Lanier has been growing hemp. He came to expect the police to arrive on his doorstep each spring, enquiring as to whether his crop was hemp or marijuana. Those early inspection days are behind him now, as hemp fields in the area have become common place.

These days, Hemp Farming is growing in popularity across the Prairies. The region is experiencing an increase in hemp processing and marketing businesses, with a focus on whole plant harvest.
