Of the thousands of Uses of Hemp, there is one that is gaining recognition and growing in popularity in the construction industry – hempcrete.
Hempcrete is made by mixing hemp hurds, (the inner woody core of the hemp plant), lime-based binder and water. It is used as a material for construction and insulation.
Goodvin Designs, a tiny home and greenhouse design firm in Alberta, has discovered the benefits of using hemp as insulation. Hempcrete can help control moisture in the walls, which is especially useful in northern climates where temperatures fluctuate and are more severe. It also has fire-resistant and hydrothermal properties, making it an excellent building insulation material.
Goodvin is sharing her knowledge of building tiny hempcrete homes by holding weekend workshops.
