Cattle feed could well become one of the latest Uses of Hemp. Two research projects in Kansas State University reveal hemp’s great potential.
Hans Coetzee, K-State professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, says the research being conducted on hemp is similar to those of corn and ethanol.
The majority of hemp is grown for its CBD oil, but the process for extracting oil leaves the remainder of the plant as waste. The studies are looking at whether the plant remains could be incorporated into animal feed. The focus is on cattle and other ruminants, because they can make use of the high fibre and cellulose content of hemp, the same way they do with ethanol.
For cattle farmers and hemp producers, these studies show a promising outlook for the opportunity of incorporating hemp in animal feedstock. This use of industrial hemp could help secure a lasting, stable market for the growing hemp industry.
