According to Harley Naumann, a forage physiologist from the University of Missouri, Sunn hemp’s quick growing qualities are a welcome add-on to normal cool weather feed.
Sunn hemp was originally grown for its fibre. It is aptly named, as it produces bright yellow flowers. It has proven to grow very well in warm weather and is becoming very popular as an alternative feed for many cattle farmers in the state.
The true benefits of the crop are its high nutritional value and ability to add pounds to animals. It is high in protein and highly digestible for the cattle, and it can also replenish the nitrogen in soil.
