A newly-built house in Taranaki has put Hemp in the News and the TV series ‘Grand Designs NZ’ hosted the owners of the new home, which was made with a plant that strongly resembles marijuana.

Greg Whitham and Gayle Avery of New Plymouth decided to construct a French rural-style house for their family members and they build it out of hemp.

Their story of building one of the first hemp-constructed homes in New Zealand, and the challenges they faced, was told on the popular TV show, ‘Grand Designs NZ’ on Monday night.

Because hemp is not largely available in New Zealand, the couple had to import bales of hemp from Holland. They chose to build with hemp because they wanted to use a sustainable material that is easy on the environment.
