The growing, processing and marketing of Ohio’s new crop has Hemp in the News, as the state wraps up its first year of legal hemp farming.
Ohio farmers weren’t sure how hemp would grow in their state, nor how the crop would be processed and sold after harvest. These uncertainties meant that even if farmers grew a favourable crop, transforming the crop into marketable products could be a hinderance to their profitableness.
As it turns out, hemp does grow well in Ohio, according to hemp farmer Karen DeLuca. DeLuca and Paul Ammoroso, owners of Sano Ti Amo, grew a small plot of hemp last summer. They grew several different strains in order to see which were most conducive to Ohio growing conditions. It was a very beneficial experiment, as some strains didn’t grow well at all.
Ammoroso and DeLuca are working together with a group of individuals to construct a framework for the state’s hemp industry.
