Mark Coulton, an Australian federal politician, is rooting for the legalization of industrial hemp. He sees the potential of economic and employment growth. Coulton points out the distinction between industrial hemp and marijuana, and of how hemp is stigmatized because of its close resemblance to marijuana. Although it looks the same, it is a very different plant and does not have the same psychedelic properties.

There are many uses of industrial hemp. For example, the seeds can be used for oils, medicine, and nutritional foods, and the stalk can be used to make building materials. Coulton believes that it should no longer be illegal to grow industrial hemp.
